STD Testing Window Periods: When to Test

⏱ 6 min read

Getting tested for STDs at the right time is crucial for accurate results. Testing too early may result in false negatives, while waiting too long can delay treatment.

Window Periods by Infection

Each STD has a different window period—the time between exposure and when a test can reliably detect the infection:

  • Chlamydia: 1-2 weeks
  • Gonorrhea: 2-6 days
  • Syphilis: 3-6 weeks
  • HIV (4th generation): 2-4 weeks
  • Herpes: 4-6 weeks

When to Test

If you believe you've been exposed to an STD, consider testing immediately and then again after the window period has passed for confirmation.
